Technologies

Low latency technologies are key components for realizing multi-site performances or, more generally, for enabling distanced music and arts collaborations in real time. Some of these technologies are open source and have been developed by National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) and related communities.

LoLa

LoLa (Low Latency AV Streaming System) is a project of Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Tartini from Trieste (Italy) in collaboration with GARR, the Italian NREN.

LoLa is a tool which permits musicians to perform many more rehearsals before a concert, but also provides the ability to perform real concerts for the public - with distributed performers, and distributed audience, too.

UltraGrid

UltraGrid is a project of the Czech NREN CESNET in collaboration with SITOLA, the Laboratory of Advanced Network Technologies at Masaryk University.

UltraGrid is a software implementation of low latency video and audio transmissions using commodity PC and Mac hardware. It uses uncompressed or very low compression-ratio streams to achieve up to 8K resolution with as low as 100ms end-to-end latency.

MVTP

The Modular Video Transmission Platform (MVTP) has been developed at SAGElab - a joint laboratory of the Czech NREN CESNET, the Faculty of Information Technologies and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Czech Technical University.

MVTP is an all-in-one device that enables network video and audio transmissions superior to HDTV with an added latency of less than 1 millisecond.

JackTrip

The JackTrip Foundation - a nonprofit corporation - is a collaboration between Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) and Silicon Valley software entrepreneurs.

JackTrip provides several award-winning collaboration tools for online music rehearsal and performance, powered by an open source engine.

8K Live Streaming

Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Centre (PSNC) is a research lab of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Among many other things, PSNC is responsible for the national optical research network PIONIER.

For years, PSNC has also been successfully implementing UHD content streaming with effective compression or VR / 360° content transmission in the best possible quality.
